Steer around these moving pitfalls

Moving can be a stressful time, no doubt. Here are a few common pitfalls to avoid, and reminders to keep in mind when you’re getting ready to move.

- Get quotes in writing. Calling around and getting quotes over-the-phone isn’t good enough. Email companies and ask for a quote in writing, or better yet, have them come by your office or house that you plan on moving. That is the easiest way for them to size up what needs to be moved and give the most accurate estimate.

- Avoid the scams. We suggest you use a local moving company. Make sure you check out their record with the Better Business Bureau, and any online reviews available, too. Steer clear of any online scams or problems by doing your research and checking all references to ensure a quality move.

- Check references. This includes double checking to make sure the company is licensed and bonded as well as having adequate insurance.

Getting ready to move the office? Don’t stress! Here are a few tips to help make the move from one office to another go as smoothly as possible.

Plan early. That’s sometimes easier said than done, but the sooner you start working on your moving plans, the better. Call around, get quotes and start circling the moving day on your work calendar.

Communicate. Be sure everyone knows when moving day will be, that includes cleaning staff, tech folks and customers, too. Let everyone know when the big day is, so people can be prepared.

Start small. If you’re packing your items yourself, begin stowing away items you won’t need for awhile. Pack away what you can to help make the actual moving day run smoother.

Three piles when you move

There are three ways you should go through all of your belongings when you get ready to move. The first pile is keep, the things you hold near and dear and want to make sure make it to your next house. Obviously pack these with care and entrust a great moving company.

The second pile is to give away. These items are still objects in good condition that you can’t use or have no use for anymore. Pack these up to give away to a local woman’s shelter, Salvation Army store or some other organization. Be sure to get a receipt for a tax write off, too.

The third pile is to trash. If you can’t use it in your new home and it isn’t in good condition to give away, either recycle it or trash it. Things like batteries, cell phones and toner cartridges are perfect for recycling, along with newspapers, magazines and other periodicals. Broken toys, ripped clothes and damaged items need to hit the trash bin.

Tips for moving during the holidays

It can feel extra stressful this time of year to add moving to the mix. Here are a few ideas to help you stay festive, thankful and productive during the holidays.

- Keep the music pumping. If you find yourself packing during the holidays, keep some Christmas cheer around. Play holiday music to help keep you in the festive mood, but also keep you motivated.

- If you’ve done some Christmas shopping already, pack those presents in a box together. Be sure and label it appropriately, and keep a careful eye on the box so you know where it ends up in your new house.

- If you’re going to be decorating for the holidays at your new house, make sure you also keep a careful eye on the decoration boxes. A good first box to unpack at your new house would be a decoration box, to help put you and your house in a festive feeling.

Enlist your friends…. have a packing party!

Packing a house is a lot of work. There’s one, sure-fire way to make it a lot less stressful, and actually fun!

Have a packing party.

Here’s the scoop…invite your friends, have plenty of food, drinks and boxes, then get to work.

Set up boxes throughout your house, complete with permanent markers, packing tape and scissors. Let your friends help you pack rooms in your house you don’t mind friends going through. For example, set up a packing party for your garage, laundry room, closets and more. Let friends bring their food and drink and conversation into your house over some boxes and tape.

What a great way to enjoy friendships and conversation while getting work done at the same time.

Sounds like a great idea to us!
