Three piles when you move

There are three ways you should go through all of your belongings when you get ready to move. The first pile is keep, the things you hold near and dear and want to make sure make it to your next house. Obviously pack these with care and entrust a great moving company.

The second pile is to give away. These items are still objects in good condition that you can’t use or have no use for anymore. Pack these up to give away to a local woman’s shelter, Salvation Army store or some other organization. Be sure to get a receipt for a tax write off, too.

The third pile is to trash. If you can’t use it in your new home and it isn’t in good condition to give away, either recycle it or trash it. Things like batteries, cell phones and toner cartridges are perfect for recycling, along with newspapers, magazines and other periodicals. Broken toys, ripped clothes and damaged items need to hit the trash bin.

Tips for moving during the holidays

It can feel extra stressful this time of year to add moving to the mix. Here are a few ideas to help you stay festive, thankful and productive during the holidays.

- Keep the music pumping. If you find yourself packing during the holidays, keep some Christmas cheer around. Play holiday music to help keep you in the festive mood, but also keep you motivated.

- If you’ve done some Christmas shopping already, pack those presents in a box together. Be sure and label it appropriately, and keep a careful eye on the box so you know where it ends up in your new house.

- If you’re going to be decorating for the holidays at your new house, make sure you also keep a careful eye on the decoration boxes. A good first box to unpack at your new house would be a decoration box, to help put you and your house in a festive feeling.

Packing a house is a lot of work. There’s one, sure-fire way to make it a lot less stressful, and actually fun!

Have a packing party.

Here’s the scoop…invite your friends, have plenty of food, drinks and boxes, then get to work.

Set up boxes throughout your house, complete with permanent markers, packing tape and scissors. Let your friends help you pack rooms in your house you don’t mind friends going through. For example, set up a packing party for your garage, laundry room, closets and more. Let friends bring their food and drink and conversation into your house over some boxes and tape.

What a great way to enjoy friendships and conversation while getting work done at the same time.

Sounds like a great idea to us!

Ready for the big move? Before you hire a moving company, here are the Top 10 questions you should ask a potential mover. If they can’t provide you with an adequate answer, then they are probably not a reputable company.

Moving… with children!

To some, the they cringe at the thought of having to pack up the house and move, with toddlers in tow. Here are a few ideas to help you move, and include your children.

- Pick a color. Let your child pick a color for their room. For example, if she chooses “pink”, label all her boxes in pink marker, use pink tape and let her decorate pink Post-It notes for labeling. Help get her involved in the moving process by letting her make some decisions.

- Help pack. Sure, it won’t get done how you’d like, but let the little one help, too. Let her pack some boxes of her own items, label them and tape them up. Maybe even pack a surprise or two inside the boxes, so when she opens them back up at the new house, she’ll be thrilled.

- Postcards aren’t dead. Help your little one create postcards for all of her playdate friends. Make the front a picture of her and her friends. Address them with your new address, and give them out to friends. She’ll be thrilled to get mail at her new place, and be sure to return the favor to friends who participate.

- Give in! Too much to do? Let Apple Moving take care of the packing for you! (We think this one might be the best idea, yet!)
